Quick answer: The stochastic oscillator shows where the latest close sits inside the recent high–low range, from 0 (at the low) to 100 (at the high). The usual setting is 14, 3, 3. Above 80 is "overbought" and below 20 "oversold", but in a strong trend it can stay there for a long time. Use it with a trend filter, never alone.

Real V75 5-minute candles: the stochastic stayed above 80 for long stretches during the rally.

How the Stochastic Is Calculated

  1. Find the highest high and lowest low of the last 14 candles.
  2. %K = (close − lowest low) ÷ (highest high − lowest low) × 100.
  3. Smooth %K with a 3-period average (slow %K).
  4. %D = 3-period average of %K, the signal line.

Best Settings for Deriv

5, 3, 3Fast, many signalsScalping, more false signals
14, 3, 3Balanced (default)Most traders start here
21, 5, 5Slow, fewer signalsHigher timeframes

Three Ways Traders Use It

Biggest mistake: selling just because the stochastic is above 80. In the chart above it stayed overbought through most of the rally.

A Simple Plan to Test on Demo

  1. Trend filter: only buy when price is above the 50-period moving average.
  2. Entry: stochastic drops below 20, then %K crosses above %D.
  3. Stop: below the recent swing low or 1.5× {L("atr-indicator-deriv", "ATR")}.
  4. Target: 1.5–2× the stop distance.
  5. Log 50 demo trades before judging it.

Risk warning: Trading Deriv products such as digit options, multipliers and synthetic indices is high-risk. You can lose all the money you deposit, quickly. No bot, signal or strategy can guarantee profit, and past results do not predict future results. Practise on a demo account first, only trade money you can afford to lose, and check that Deriv is allowed where you live. This guide is education, not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best stochastic setting?

14, 3, 3 is the standard starting point; faster settings give more false signals.

What do 80 and 20 mean on the stochastic?

Price is near the top or bottom of its recent range, not that it must turn.

Is the stochastic good for Deriv synthetic indices?

It describes the range well, but it cannot predict random prices; use it with a trend filter.

What is the difference between %K and %D?

%K is the main line; %D is its 3-period average used as a signal line.

Stochastic or RSI?

Both measure momentum; RSI uses gains vs losses, stochastic uses the range. Pick one, not both.

Can I use the stochastic in a Deriv bot?

Deriv Bot has indicator blocks, but test rules on demo first.
