Ichimoku Cloud Strategy: The Five Lines, How to Read the Cloud and a Test on Real V75 Candles

Quick answer: The Ichimoku Cloud uses five lines to show trend, momentum and support in one view. Price above the cloud means a bullish bias; below means bearish; inside means no clear trend. The standard settings are 9, 26 and 52. On 500 real V75 5-minute candles there were 20 cloud breakouts, and 13 (65%) kept going for the next 30 minutes, but 20 trades is far too few to prove anything. Tenkan/Kijun crosses were right only 44% of the time (18 crosses).

Kijun-sen (base)Middle of the 26-period high and lowMedium-term balance; often support or resistance

Three Common Ichimoku Signals

  1. Cloud breakout: price closes above (or below) the whole cloud.
  2. TK cross: Tenkan crosses above Kijun (bullish) or below (bearish).
  3. Kijun bounce: in a trend, price pulls back to Kijun and continues.

With samples this small, a 65% result can easily be luck. The cloud is still useful as a visual filter: many traders only take Rise or multiplier Up trades when price is above the cloud.

Ichimoku for Scalping?

Ichimoku needs 52 candles before the cloud is complete and shifts lines 26 periods, so on 1-minute charts it reacts slowly to a fast index. Most traders use it on 5-minute to 1-hour charts.
