Quick answer: The ADX (Average Directional Index) measures how strong a trend is on a 0–100 scale; it does not show direction. +DI above −DI means buyers are stronger; −DI above +DI means sellers are. The usual setting is 14 periods, and readings above 25 are called a strong trend. On 500 real V75 5-minute candles, ADX was above 25 about a third of the time, and following the DI direction during those strong-trend readings was right only 42% of the time over the next 30 minutes.

ADX (white) shows trend strength; +DI and −DI show which side is stronger.

How the ADX Is Calculated (Simply)

  1. +DM: how much today’s high went above yesterday’s high. −DM: how much today’s low went below yesterday’s low.
  2. Both are smoothed over 14 periods and divided by the average true range (see {L("atr-indicator-deriv", "ATR")}) to give +DI and −DI.
  3. DX = the gap between +DI and −DI divided by their sum, × 100.
  4. ADX = DX smoothed over 14 periods.

Reading the ADX

ADX valueCommon meaning
Below 20Weak or no trend: range trading
20–25A trend may be starting
Above 25Strong trend
Above 40Very strong, often late in the move

What Our Real-Data Test Showed

Condition (500 V75 5-minute candles)SignalsPrice moved the DI way over the next 6 candles
ADX above 25, follow +DI/−DI15641.7%
ADX below 20, follow +DI/−DI20463.2%

The “strong trend” signals did worse than a coin flip in this sample, and the “weak trend” ones did better. Signals that sit next to each other overlap, so these samples are smaller than they look. The honest lesson: on a random index, ADX describes the past; it does not predict the next half hour.
