Position Size Calculator: How Much to Stake on Deriv Options, Multipliers and MT5 Trades

Quick answer: Decide how much of your balance you will risk on one trade (usually 1–2%), then size the trade so a full loss equals that amount. On Deriv options the stake is the risk, so with a $200 balance and 1% risk you stake $2. On multipliers and MT5 you size from the stop loss: risk ÷ stop distance. Stops must grow with the timeframe: an average V75 candle covered 55 points on 1-minute but 521 points on 1-hour.

Step 1: Risk Per Trade

Balance1% risk2% risk
$50$0.50$1.00
$200$2.00$4.00
$1,000$10.00$20.00
KES 10,000 (≈ $77)KES 100KES 200

KES conversion is an example only; use the rate shown in your Deriv cashier.

Step 2: Size the Trade

ProductWhat you lose if wrongPosition size formula
Options (Rise/Fall, digits, Touch, Turbos, Vanillas)The stakeStake = risk amount
MultipliersUp to the stake; usually your stop loss amountSet stop loss = risk amount, choose stake and multiplier so the stop sits beyond the normal move
MT5 CFDsStop distance × lot value per pointLots = risk ÷ (stop distance × value per point per lot)

Worked Example: MT5 Volatility 75

Calculation: balance $500, risk 1% = $5. Your stop is 260 points away (2 average 5-minute candles). On an instrument where 1 lot moves $1 per point, lots = 5 ÷ (260 × 1) ≈ 0.019 lot. If the minimum lot is larger than your result, the trade is too big for your balance: skip it. Check the real contract size in MT5 (Symbol → Specification); see Deriv lot size guide.

Step 3: Match the Stop to the Timeframe

Average Volatility 75 candle range by timeframe
Average candle range on real V75 data: higher timeframes need wider stops and smaller positions.
V75 timeframeAverage candle range (real data)
1 minute55 points (0.14%)
5 minutes131 points (0.35%)
15 minutes231 points (0.62%)
1 hour521 points (1.27%)
1 day2,589 points (6.18%)

A stop tighter than one normal candle is often hit by noise. Wider stops are fine as long as the position is smaller, so the dollar risk stays the same. The ATR gives the live figure.
