Deriv Matches and Differs: How They Work, the Real Odds and Safer Settings

Quick answer: Matches and Differs are Deriv digit contracts about the last digit of the final tick. Matches wins only if that digit equals the one you chose (about 1 chance in 10) and pays a large multiple. Differs wins if it is any other digit (about 9 in 10) but pays a small profit. On a fair random index neither has an edge: Differs wins often, and one loss can wipe out many wins.

How Matches and Differs Work

  1. Pick a synthetic index, for example Volatility 100 (1s) Index.
  2. Choose a digit 0–9 and a duration (1 to 10 ticks).
  3. Matches: you win if the last digit of the exit tick equals your digit.
  4. Differs: you win if the last digit is anything else.

The Real Odds

ContractChance to win (fair digits)Typical payoutWhat it feels like
MatchesAbout 10%Large multiple of stakeLong losing runs, rare big wins
DiffersAbout 90%Small profit per winMany small wins, sudden big loss

Deriv sets payouts so the expected value is slightly negative for the buyer, like every option product. A 90% win rate does not mean profit: if a Differs win pays about 9% of the stake, one loss erases roughly ten wins.

Is There a "Best Digit" for Differs?

Digit-frequency tools show which digits appeared most or least in the last few hundred ticks. On a random index, past frequency does not change the next tick’s odds. We measured this on real Deriv data in Digit Sync tested and the digit analysis guide.

Differs With Martingale: Why Accounts Blow Up

Doubling after a loss turns a rare loss into a chain. In our money-management test on real Deriv data, uncapped martingale wiped a $50 account in most runs; a fixed stake never did.

Safer Settings to Test on Demo

SettingStarting point
Stake1–2% of balance, fixed
Duration1 tick (faster feedback) or 5 ticks
Daily stop-loss10% of balance
Take-profit5% of balance, then stop
MartingaleOff, or capped at 2 steps

Run it on the $10,000 demo and log every session in the H-BOT journal.

A Demo Practice Plan (One Week)

  1. Day 1: record 200 ticks and count each last digit.
  2. Day 2–5: 50 demo Differs trades with a fixed stake, no martingale.
  3. Day 6: compare profit with the number of losses; note the worst streak.
  4. Day 7: decide limits based on that worst streak.

Risk warning: Trading Deriv products such as digit options, multipliers and synthetic indices is high-risk. You can lose all the money you deposit, quickly. No bot, signal or strategy can guarantee profit, and past results do not predict future results. Practise on a demo account first, only trade money you can afford to lose, and check that Deriv is allowed where you live. This guide is education, not financial advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Matches and Differs on Deriv?

Digit contracts on the last digit of the final tick: Matches wins if it equals your digit, Differs wins if it does not.

What is the best strategy for Differs?

There is no guaranteed strategy. Use a fixed small stake, a daily stop-loss and take-profit, and avoid uncapped martingale.

Which digit is best for Differs?

On a random index every digit has about a 10% chance on each tick; past frequency does not change that.

Why do I lose on Differs even though it wins 90%?

Each win pays little, so a single loss can cancel many wins. The payout is set so the long-run expectation is slightly negative.

How many ticks should I use?

1 tick gives the fastest result; longer durations do not change the digit odds.

Can a bot win Matches?

A bot only follows rules faster. It cannot predict a random digit.
